Bad Habits to Avoid before and after Your Wisdom Tooth is Extracted

Asking your Plano dentist to pull your impacted wisdom tooth out of your mouth can do you a lot of good. When your impacted wisdom tooth is gone, it’s highly unlikely for you to develop severe dental problems such as tooth decay, jaw stiffness, and periodontal disease. Tooth extraction can greatly improve your overall oral health.

Here are some of the bad habits that you need to avoid before and after your wisdom tooth extraction. Before your procedure:

• Not adhering to a cigarette-free lifestyle. Smoking prior to undergoing wisdom tooth extraction makes it more likely for you to end up with an infected surgical wound.

• Not wearing comfortable, low-heeled shoes on your big day. Your procedure may prevent you from walking properly for a number of hours. Therefore, wearing high-heeled shoes on your big day increases your chances of tripping and sustaining an injury while leaving your dentist’s clinic.

• Not taking your prescribed medications. Failing to take your prescribed medications can cause you to suffer from surgical infections.
After your procedure:

• Rinsing your mouth vigorously. Vigorously rinsing your mouth may dislodge the blood clot, thereby keeping your surgical wound from healing immediately.

• Drinking through a straw. Using a straw to consume your beverages may also dislodge the blood clot.

• Touching your surgical wound. If you touch your surgical wound, it may become infected.

Dr. John Hucklebridge can tell you what other bad habits to avoid before and after your wisdom tooth is extracted. Just contact us to schedule an appointment with him.
