Sterilization And Disinfection

Plano Smile Studio uses various methods to sterilize and disinfect in order to kill bacteria and viruses. Our staff is trained in these procedures and their appropriate use.

All dental instruments are cleaned and sterilized in-between patient visits by methods that kill the AIDS virus and other microscopic organisms capable of causing diseases. Common acceptable sterilization methods include an autoclave using steam under pressure, dry heat in an oven-like environment, and chemical vapor sterilization.

We use disinfection procedures on surfaces and equipment that cannot be removed for autoclave cleaning and sterilization, such as countertops, drawer handles, x-ray unit heads and light handles. Disinfection is done in the treatment room between patient visits to assure the utmost cleanliness for each patient.
The use of disposable items is another way we maintain a clean and safe office. Many dental materials such as gloves, masks, wipes, paper drapes, needles and scalpel blades are used only once and then disposed of properly.

Sterilization & Infection Control

We know how important it is to feel comfortable and safe. Our foremost concern is the health and safety of our patients. To assure you of this comfort and safety, Plano Smile Studio provides the most up to date infection control techniques. These infection control procedures include:

  • Wearing gloves, masks and protective eyewear.
  • Intensive hand washing before and after each treatment.
  • Changing gloves after each patient.
  • Sterilizing dental instruments after each use.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting the surfaces and the equipment in the treatment room after each patient.
  • Disposing of needles and other sharp items in special containers.
  • Disposing of waste items and contaminated material properly.
  • Sterile water used in all treatment rooms.
  • Water lines disinfected daily; barrier techniques to eliminate cross contamination.

Some of these precautions are readily visible to you during your dental visit: the general exceptional cleanliness of the office, the use of masks and gloves, special waste containers, and our frequent hand washing. Other precautions, such as sterilization and disinfection are performed before your visit.
